When do I apply for a RESIDENTIAL service?
- When you have built a new residence, rewired or renovated the existing one, or moved into a rented apartment/building. You must establish a contract for service in your own name because it is illegal to use power that is billed to another person.
What do I need to DO?
- Acquire a Certificate of Inspection from the Government Electrical Inspectorate, Ministry of Works.
- Go to the nearest GPL Commercial Office to make your application.
- Take with you your national ID card or valid passport.
- Proof of ownership of the building (Transport or Bill of Sale), or evidence of rental (letter of tenancy or contract).
What do I need to KNOW?
- When your application is completed, GPL will conduct a site investigation and advise you of the costs.
- A meter and service cable will be installed on a new building.
- The building may continue to receive electricity if the service had not been interrupted, but GPL will conduct a site investigation to ensure that all requirements have been met.
- If the service had been disconnected on the request of the previous tenant/owner less than 6 months before, it would be restored immediately.
- If 6 months have passed since disconnection, you must present a Certificate of Inspection when you apply.
- If it had been disconnected for non-payment of bills, the service may not be restored until outstanding balances are paid.
- Once your contract is established, you will be billed on a monthly basis.
WHEN DO I APPLY FOR A BUSINESS SERVICE?
- When you have established a new business, or moved your business into another building, or constructed a new building, or renovated and rewired your present building.
How are business tariffs determined?
- The tariff depends on the amount of power your load requires. GPL can help determine likely load levels. We will also advise you on the requirements regarding your use of electricity. Always remember that is DANGEROUS AND ILLEGAL to use power directed to a residence for commercial or industrial business.

- Because of the location of your building (if it is a new one), GPL may have to extend the existing power distribution system with new poles, lines, etc. to reach your building. In this case, you would be advised of any additional costs.
What happens if my load requirements change?
- You must inform GPL immediately. If you operate equipment/appliances with insufficient power, fluctuations would occur that could damage your own and your neibhbours' equipment, and start a fire.
