Unserved Areas Electrification Programme (UAEP) |
|
The Government of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana (GoG) has received financing from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) towards the cost of the Unserved Areas Electrification Programme (UAEP).
The programme is jointly funded by the IDB, the Government of Guyana, Guyana Power & Light Incorporated along with Capital Contributions from prospective customers. Guyana Power and Light is the Executing Agency for the Investment Component of the programme. GPL's obligations with respect to the Investment Component are embodied in a Project Agreement entered into with the GoG. The key objectives of the Investment Component are to provide electricity to at least 30,000 households in what are classified as Unserved Areas, and to assess and reduce the losses which plague the company. Under the Project Agreement, GPL is responsible for publishing on its web site, a list of all contracts awarded for a value above US$100,000. This data is to be updated every month. |

Beginning of Phase 1 |
|
Materials for the Unserved Areas Electrification (UAEP) are being stockpiled and construction of distribution networks will commence by mid year 2005. Residents in unserved areas along the coast are reminded of the following:
The UAEP will be implemented in two phases: Phase 1 - May 2005 to December 30, 2006 All selected unserved areas will have access to electricity upon completion of the UAEP. Construction of distribution networks have been completed in the pilot areas. Customers in these areas are already receiving electricity. Residents in areas listed must complete the following in order to receive electricity: 1. Pay the customer contribution of G$10,000 (per household) to any of the GPL offices (listed) or other temporary offices as may be publicized. While a one-sum payment is preferable, payments in amounts of $2,000 or more would also be accepted. 2. Have your premises wired to the required specification with the new GPL interface, and obtain a Certificate of Inspection from the Electrical Inspector's Department, Ministry of Works. 3. Complete out a GPL application form for the supply of electricity and provide proof of legal occupancy, which includes a title document, allocation letter from the Ministry of Housing or tenancy agreement. 4. Submit the original Certificate of Inspection to GPL before service connection (Retain a copy in your possession). A Security Deposit is also required but it will be refunded upon the termination of the service contract with GPL. This Security Deposit is calculated based on two times the average monthly charges or $5,000 (for basic lighting and small appliances), whichever is greater. |
