Frequency Conversion and Network Upgrade

The Guyana Power and Light in an effort to upgrade its network has embarked on a frequency conversion programme in parts of Queenstown and Durban Street Werk-en-Rust between Camp and High Streets.

The distribution networks in those areas were constructed over forty (40) years ago and as a result are scheduled for upgrade and frequency conversion from 50Hz to 60Hz. Replacement of defective poles, upgrade of conductors and installation of new transformers has already commenced.

Further, the 60Hz supply will affect the operation of any appliance with a 50Hz motor or transformer to the extent that failure can occur. Therefore, all 50Hz refrigerators, freezers, air conditioned units, fans, water pumps, music systems (except with DC drives), fluorescent lamps, mercury vapour lamps and the like will have to be converted. On the other hand, all appliances with dual frequency, that is appliances with 50/60Hz will not be affected.

The new network will operate at 13,800V and will result in an improved quality of supply, during this transition period power will be supplied from Sophia, and ultimately the new power plant at Kingston.

GPL is excited about this new development which is targeted at improving its quality of service and solicits its customer’s cooperation in making the transition a success.
